CHRISTIANS have long anticipated the promised return of Jesus Christ. Generations of believers have prayed, “Thy Kingdom come,” longing for the day when the King of Kings will reign in righteousness and peace. But with wars, disasters, moral decline, and chaos increasing globally, the question arises more urgently than ever: Could Christ return tonight?
The Promise of His Coming--
Jesus Himself promised:
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself.” (John 14:3).
After His resurrection, two angels testified to the disciples:
“This same Jesus… shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).
These were not vague words of comfort—they were clear affirmations that He will return.
The New Testament is filled with similar promises. The apostles taught that Jesus' second coming would be literal, visible, and glorious. Paul wrote,
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God” (1 Thessalonians 4:16).
This is not a secret event—Christ coming will be visible ("every eye will see Him"--Rev. 1:7) and it will shake the heavens and earth!
The 'Last Days': What the Bible Reveals
Many today speak of “the last days” as if Christ could return at any moment. But what does Scripture actually mean by “the last days”?
"God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son.." (Heb.1:1-2)
Hebrews 1:2 says that “in these last days” God has spoken through His Son. In other words, the last days began with Christ’s first coming and continue until His return. Yet the Bible gives specific prophetic signs to identify the final phase of these last days—the time just before His return.
Could It Be 'Tonight'?
Could Jesus return tonight or tomorrow? Not according to the timeline Jesus Himself provided. In Matthew 24, Jesus’ disciples asked, “What shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” (v. 3). Jesus gave a detailed prophecy known as the Olivet Discourse. He spoke of the following prophetic events--
▪️1st seal, White horse--False prophets, fake religion, lawless preachers (Matt. 24:4-5; Rev. 6:1-2)
▪️2nd seal, Red horse- Wars, rumors of wars (Matt. 24:6-7; Rev. 6:3-4)
▪️3rd seal, Black horse--Famines, scarcity (Matt. 24:7; Rev. 6:5-6)
▪️4th seal, Pale horse--Death, plague, worldwide pandemic (Matt. 24:7; Rev. 6:7-8)
▪️5th seal, Great Tribulation--Persecution of God's saints, martyrdom (Matt. 24:8-12, 21-22; Rev. 6:9-11; & Rev. 7:1-17)
▪️6th seal, Heavenly signs, natural calamities, sun and moon darkened, stars falling (Matt. 24:9; Rev. 6:12-17)
Only after these things would “the sign of the Son of man” appear in heaven, and “all the tribes of the earth” would mourn (Matthew 24:30-31)--
▪️7th seal, the 7 trumpets (the 'Day of the Lord') Matt. 24:30-31; Revelation 8.
Christ also says that the preaching of the Gospel as precursors to His return (Matthew 24:14).
Clearly, there are prophetic events yet to unfold—such as the blowing of the seven trumpets in Revelation (chapters 8–11). The last trumpet signals the return of Christ and the resurrection of the saints:
"Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." (1 Corinthians 15:51-52)
Until that final trumpet sounds, Christ will not return.
The Error of the Secret Rapture--
Some teach a doctrine called the “secret rapture,” in which Christ silently snatches believers away before a period of tribulation. But this concept is not found in Scripture.
Paul makes it clear in 1 Thessalonians 4:13–17 that the Lord will descend with a shout, the voice of the archangel, and the trump of God. Jesus said “every eye shall see him” (Revelation 1:7). Not one verse describes a silent, invisible coming for the Church before a separate “second” coming.
The rapture theory also undermines the call to endurance and preparedness. Jesus didn’t say, “Don’t worry, you’ll escape tribulation.” He said, “He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved” (Matthew 24:13).
The Two (2) Fig Trees and the Final Generation
Jesus gave two prophetic parables concerning human conditions for His return:
"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door." (Matthew 24:32–33)
This “fig tree” generation would witness the fulfillment of end-time prophecies as they will be made aware of 'times and seasons'.
But another fig tree principle that we need to be watchful as we look inward is the "fruit" that we are producing spiritually--
"Then he told this parable: 'A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ ‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’" (Luke 13:6-9)
The 'barren' fig tree reminder should be an all- encompassing preparation for everyone longing to meet Christ. Do you think you are ready with the kind of fruit you have? For the type fruit God requires before His harvest, check Galatians 5.
How long is a "Generation"?
Scripture gives insight. Moses wrote that a generation could be around 40 years (Numbers 32:13). David lived a full life and “served his own generation by the will of God” before dying (Acts 13:36), which could indicate a lifespan of 70–80 years (Psalm 90:10). While no one knows the exact length, the key point is this: there is a final generation alive when all signs converge—and many believe we are living in it.
Prepare Now for His Coming
Though Jesus cannot return “tonight” in the prophetic timeline, He will return soon—and His coming will be sudden and unexpected for many. He warned, “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come” (Matthew 24:42). It’s not about guessing dates—it’s about readiness.
How should we prepare?
▪️Repent and turn to God wholeheartedly. (Acts 3:19)
▪️Live by His commandments and walk in holiness, and spiritual fruitfulness. (1 John 2:3–6; Gal. 5:22-23)
▪️Stay spiritually alert and avoid spiritual slumber. (Romans 13:11–12)
▪️Strengthen faith and endure trials with hope without wavering. (Revelation 14:12)
▪️Encourage others and hold fast to the Gospel of Christ and His coming Kingdom (Hebrews 10:23–25)
Verses of Hope for Believers--
God promises hope, not fear, for His people:
“Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness… and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” —2 Timothy 4:8
“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” —Titus 2:13
“He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” —Revelation 22:20
Not Tonight—But Soon!
Jesus Christ will return. That’s a biblical certainty. But according to Scripture, certain prophetic events must unfold first. So no, He will not return tonight—but His return is imminent in the sense that it will come quickly when the time is right. The real question is: Will you be ready when He does?
Now is the time to seek God, grow in grace, and prepare your heart—because the trumpet will sound, the sky will split open, and every eye shall see Him. And in that moment, nothing else will matter but whether you are His!
