[Commentary]
AS WORLD leaders Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin gather in Alaska on August 15 for a high-stakes summit on Ukraine, hopes are once again rising for a breakthrough. Negotiators are urging both sides to consider a lasting solution—perhaps a U.N.-monitored ceasefire, internationally supervised referendums in disputed regions, and real accountability for war crimes.
While President Trump seeks to broker peace and Putin aims to restore Russia’s global standing, the ultimate question remains: Will the rights of the Ukrainian people truly be honored—or will the terrible cost of war continue?
The truth is, world peace is not a new dream. For thousands of years, men and women have longed for it, negotiated for it, and fought for it—only to see it slip through their fingers.
Why Peace Is So Difficult Today
Humanity’s past has been a tragic chronicle of man’s cruelty to man. From ancient empires to modern superpowers, history is littered with peace treaties signed one day and broken the next.
The Bible gives a sobering reason why. In the book of Isaiah, our Creator sums up our inability to live at peace with each other:
“Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths. The way of peace they have not known, and there is no justice in their ways” (Isaiah 59:7–8).
Prophet Jeremiah also saw the same conditions:
"Everyone is given to covetousness;
From the prophet even to the priest
Everyone deals falsely.
For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly,
Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’
When there is no peace." (Jeremiah 8:10-11)
Even the best-intentioned agreements are often built on fragile political interests, national pride, and the quest for power. Studies on modern conflict show that while the number of wars between nations has declined since the mid-20th century, civil wars and internal conflicts have risen sharply, fueled by ethnic tensions, economic inequality, and ideological divides.
A Roadmap to Genuine Peace--
If human history proves anything, it’s that our own systems of government cannot produce lasting peace. The prophet Isaiah points to the only real solution:
“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end” (Isaiah 9:6–7).
This is not poetic idealism—it is a divine guarantee. The prophet Daniel foresaw the coming of Jesus Christ and the global government He will establish:
“His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed” (Daniel 7:14).
The apostles preached the same message. Peter spoke of “times of refreshing” and the “restoration of all things” when Christ returns (Acts 3:20–21). Zechariah revealed that when Jesus’ feet stand on the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:4), He will intervene in human affairs and put an end to war.
The Coming Kingdom of Peace
Revelation describes Christ reigning for a thousand years, bringing justice and righteousness to the nations (Revelation 20:4). Jude testified that the Lord will come “with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all” (Jude 14–15).
Daniel also recorded God’s promise:
“The kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High” (Daniel 7:27).
Peace and good government are inseparable. The moment the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of our Lord (Revelation 11:15), the endless cycle of war will end.
God has promised a “covenant of peace”—a future without fear, where His sanctuary will be among His people forever (Ezekiel 37:26–28). The prophet Isaiah paints a breathtaking picture of that world:
“They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit… The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox… They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain” (Isaiah 65:21–25).
Peace Beyond Our Wildest Dreams
The Alaska summit may or may not end the war in Ukraine. History suggests even the most promising peace talks are temporary at best. But the good news is, true and lasting peace is coming—not by human negotiation, but by the direct intervention of the Prince of Peace Himself.
When Jesus Christ returns, He will bring justice for the oppressed, healing for the nations, and a peace that will never be broken. Until then, we are called to live as "ambassadors" of that coming Kingdom—choosing peace in our own relationships, standing for righteousness, and holding fast to the hope that the world’s greatest Peacemaker is on His way.
Yes, peace is coming—and it’s beyond our wildest dreams!
“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
And a little child shall lead them." (Isaian 11:6)
